Huge filter on a 10 gallon aquarium?
Ok I know I ask some weird questions lol but it is mostly stuff I see people doing and I am curious but too shy to ask them.
I frequent people’s houses with aquariums and usually they use either a canister filter or one that comes with an aquarium kit.
Today I noticed a 10 gallon tank and a HUGE HOB filter. I looked closer and it is the same one I use in conjunction to my canister for my 75 gallon African Cichlid tank. It is rated for a 75 gallon. It didn’t appear to be tweaked other than the outflow was redirected with a piece of plastic and the intake had a sponge on it. This was for a tank with some apple snails and 1 Betta lol.
Has anyone ever seen someone use such a huge filter on a tiny aquarium? I use mini canisters on my Betta tanks and those do more than enough so what would be the purpose of that big of a filter?
The only thing that too large a filter can do is create too much current in a small tank. As the owner has fixed that by modifying the outlet so his betta isn’t blown out of the water, then it’s fine.
If you have more filter media than you need, then the cycle bacteria will just spread themselves out thinner, but you have better filtering that can easily cope with some uneaten food or a dead snail.
I would guess that he just had the filter already, better to use it than go and buy a piddly little one, and leave the big one laying about.

DIY Moon Light – Make Your Own! Aquarium owners have provided artificial sunlight for their tanks for many years. There are many different types and styles of day time lights, but not much attention has been given to night time lighting. In the evening, typically it is lights out and the fish, corals, invertebrates, etc., are left in the dark. However, in their natural environment, it is seldom totally dark. The moon gives of… |
