Is this an adequate substitute for a bell of light?
I have a 10 gallon aquarium 10×20 I am preparing for tropical freshwater fish. Unfortunately, when I bought the aquarium for several years, which was meant to be a terrarium, in which I followed the hermit crabs. Aquarium hoods all I can found in the $ 60 – $ 130 range, which is much more than I have to spend on a bell. My screen first with a light on the top is a suitable replacement? This allow air flow a little more, which I think is a good thing, and the light still be there.
The hood of the screen will work fine, but make sure that is well connected, if you have a cat. Your reptile is probably incandescent light so it could melt the plastic edges of your screen first if you do not support in some small wood blocks or something. I want to give up a heater if you have a warm glow. The air flow allows for greater oxygenation of the water. Good thing. I hope fine mesh yiou have enough for a jumping fish will not be injured. A larger tank is easier to maintain and may have more fish without causing water toxicity due to fish waste (ammonia). If you use a 10g, you are at a disadvantage. Water changes should be done frequently (50% every 1-2 weeks if possible), but they are problems to be done. You can keep only 10 @ small (1-2 inches) of fish in a 10g. schools of fish need at least six of its own species to be confident and secure. They may produce more colors and have less disease. Some school students are more resistant tetras (neons and cardinals need although fresh water, acid), white clouds, zebra danios, Cory catfish, and cherry barbs. Platis, guppies and xifos be kept in pairs or larger groups, more women than men to avoid fighting. I would avoid mollies. Not a bad fish, but are more susceptible to disease and there are plenty of other owners to live well there. You do not need an algae eater if the gravel vacuum often and have lots of plants. Thus, there will be no excess nutrients to algae. if you get algae, to scrape with a scraper made of glass. As a last advice, "The Simple Guide to Freshwater Aquariums" by David Boruschiwitz (or as it's spelled) is a must read before buying anything. Really. Follow him on board and have happy fish compatible.
