Aquarium Nails
How a nail in my driftwood affect my freshwater aquarium?

THE SKINNY: I bought some pieces of wood that is weighted by ceramic tile with a nail. I plan to use ecosystems substrate and cover the bottom half of my driftwood including nail and tile. How will it be a nail immersed affect to chemicals in the tank? I have not started my tank yet, but will use a 30 gallon tall when I started. Another question I have is that I wondered if it would be nice if you use the existing gravel that was used by the previous owner of the tank to fill at the bottom of my tank so it would not be much $ $ on expensive substrate.

The nail will rust over time, but do not affect your water. You should boil the driftwood for 20 minutes to kill any parasites trapped in the wood. This also helps remove the tannins that make the water brown. You can use gravel, but I'd like to boil down, so as to start with a parasite free tank of fuel. There is no benefit in using old water to create a new tank. What will help is using a filter of the media age or a nylon stocking filled with gravel from existing tank to establish a week of introducing beneficial bacteria to the new tank.
