What you really need for starting a freshwater aquarium?

I want to start a freshwater aquarium with tropical fish (not goldfish). I've been the pet shop, searching the net, and I'm basically overwhelmed with information from now. Aquarium Starter Kits, heating, lighting, pH levels, air pumps, plants, fake plants, decorations, rocks, etc. WOW! HELP ME! Can someone break it down for me what I need (only essential starting point out), what things he does, and basically just gave me a direct answer for someone new to all this? Thank you very much!
