What is wrong with my water? Track Fish Tank pH
One of the most difficult to maintain healthy freshwater aquarium is to maintain the water chemistry. I should know, since some of my early mistakes led to the sad death of the fish that were chosen and carefully cultivated. Let they teach you a little about the pH and the care of water in your tank, so do not make the same mistakes!
The acidity of water is measured in the "pH scale" ranging from 0 (very acid) to 14 (very alkaline). Neutral pH is right in the center, scored 7.0. Freshwater fish in particular as the water is between 5.0 and 9.0, but will to consult their books and their people fish store to give you more information about what YOU need to fish.
How do you know what the pH of your aquarium? The most common test uses a chemical called bromothymol blue (usually abbreviated as "BromoBlue"). You just a small bottle filled halfway with water in your tank, then add one or two drops of BromoBlue. Depending on the pH, the water in the vial in turn, a tone yellow, green or blue. Compare the color of a chart, and you know exactly where you stand. You can also get pre-treated strips of paper dipped in the tank, or even a sophisticated pH meter, but the BromoBlue test is quick, simple and cheap.
So why is it so important to maintain a close eye on the pH of your tank? It may drop lower when plant and animal waste begins to decay in the tank, and once the pH is below a certain point, all the bacteria that break down the waste begin to die or go dormant, so the fish begin to choke on their own ammonia. Do not let this happen to their babies! You can set a low pH, changing the water (so that the accumulation of waste is removed or diluted), or by the addition of regular soda (bicarbonate) sodium.
At the other end of the scale, the pH can be very high if you have a lot of fish and plants, such as exhaled carbon dioxide gets into the water. To lower the pH, to obtain a chemical to lower the pH of your local pet / fish store – usually included in the kit is used to measure the pH in the first place. You look at the ingredients, though – if the chemical contains phosphates, can stimulate the growth of algae in the tank. It is also more difficult to alter the pH in hard water, and if your tank seems to be resisting the changes, you may need to seek ways to soften the water first.
Love your little fish and the study of his tank every day to get used to the way they look and act normally, and can often detect symptoms of a problem as the pH imbalance all by himself!
