How to make a box filter of a saltwater aquarium?

My plan is to build a 30 gallon reef tank and would like to build my own filter cartridge for it. I am wondering what steps I have to take in the construction of the filter. How powerful a submersible pump I need, how big should the container itself, and what would be a good medium to use in it? I'm sure there is more information needed than that, but those are just some questions I had. When the deposit is made, especially coral have it and only a few fish, I'm not sure what kind fish, however, is exactly what you need to do more research before im sure.

Instead of a boat that is planning to do, why not a filter sump. Much more common in salt water and is much easier for you to do and basically the same concept, but better than a boat and cheaper! check sinks out yourself on youtube or on the web as reefcentral.com
