Sponge filtration for aquariums and ponds Why Sponge filters should not be overlooked as filters for the aquarium or pond for
filtration Foam is often overlooked type of filtration for freshwater aquariums or ponds and even marine aquariums. Many people look beyond their simplicity as ineffective, but that is its quality. I have used them for my aquarium maintenance for 27 years with excellent results. So here is a list of its attributes:
[1] Easy to use, most work with very basic air pumps or powerheads. One of the best amateur beginner filters due simplicity and cost. But filters sponge are also popular among breeders and research institutions, as they are very efficient but simple filters.
[2] Excellent biological filtration are very porous and can hold large colonies of aerobic bacteria in proportion to the space they occupy. Note that not all materials used for sponge filters are equal, are not obvious, because of this! Hydro sponge filter holds several patents for foam filters for the same reason!
[3] Mechanical filtration although not the best mechanical filters, they still do a good job for their small size and are excellent primary and secondary filters when used in combination with other filters, as head of the bed, bottle, or internal filters.
[4] There are very few "dead zones" catch outbreaks of harmful bacteria, Unlike gravel filters and even wet / dry filters (which in my experience are more valued).
[5] Easy to clean, simply remove the sponge and tighten or rinse with old aquarium water or tap water without chlorine. The advantage here is the fan is less likely to ignore filter cleaning (as opposed of many complex filters), which can lead to organic build up, the increase of nitrates and reducing KH and pH.
[6] Sponge filters are great in aquariums marine in a couple of different ways, one way is in a sump (sometimes sideways) with a small head pump (like a Via Aqua 480), and the other (for usually on a reef application) was inside the aquarium, either with an air pump or power head. The beauty of the two applications is that they are easy rinsed with aquarium water used, which in the implementation of reefs was particularly useful where the award was available to waste before a cycle and produce nitrates. They are an excellent complement to the "rock" filtered reef aquariums.
[7] Probably the best filtering option for breeding tanks hospital tanks, and even drive tanks, due to the fact that no "sucking" on minnows or weak or attract harmful bacteria.
[8] For breeding cichlids are excellent as they are not easily disturbed by the tendency of cichlids to dig.
[9] low-cost
[10] already is available in larger sizes for aquariums over 60 gallons.
[11] Sponge filters can be used even in ponds. With target = "_blank"> Hydro Pond Filter ", simply attach a pump head supply (such as Via Aqua 2600), then return line to run wherever you like (waterfall, etc). Or the Hydro Pond II can be run from a simple air pump. These filters can work in ponds up to 1500 gallons (or more, with additional units).
[12] Sponge filters are also used as target = "_blank"> "Pre-filter for the intake of bottle, wet-, dry dust filters and more. They offer a more bio-filtration to the existing system and the protection of small fish plants, or anemones absorbed by the intake of your existing filter.
These pre-filter sponges are particularly useful for HOB (power filters), which increase the biological capacity (more than bio wheels in the experiments I have done) and keep the aerobic bio filter during filter changes. With these pre-filter sponge, filter bedside are poor to fair biological filters, with them are excellent.
[13] Sponge filters are ideal for planted tanks, they do not interfere with the root structures and maintain a biological balance ideal for planted aquariums.
