Mysterious deaths of Betta fish?
Two of my eight bettas died mysteriously … I need help. (1) It died very quickly. One day, they were eating like pigs, then the next, do not eat anything and stay on the bottom. And the next day he died. (2) All my bettas others are happy and very nice, and treat everyone the same way. They have their two singles – the filtration tanks or 3 gallons are recycled (ammonia and nitrite read 0 to day for several weeks). I do a 50% water change every week. I can use the filtered water (with Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Tap Water Filter) with the recommended amount of regulatory law and Electro pH (pH 7.0). I have the thermostat at 80F. I mainly feed them Hikari Betta Bio Gold pellets, freeze dried brine shrimp and worm occurs in one or two times a week for variety. So I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. At first I was feeding 5 pellets once a day. Now I do only three, just because I can not think of anything else I could be doing wrong. What's happening?
The most likely died of shock if this happened before after a change of water. Either by temperature or pH I can not be sure. You should avoid water changes of 50%, and the electrolyte / pH stuff. Bettas do not need it. They can live in pH range 6-8, and 0-25 KH. As long as you do not change fast, or chlorinated tap water is fine. Each breeder Betta experience I know that uses the key. As biologist I'm pretty down in the water treatment that is not absolutely necessary. Add anything that water is a big risk, as there are side effects often are not aware its. 2.3 gallons in each tank filter you should make a change 10% weekly water through a gravel vacuum. As proof that not cleared my 5 tanks Betta gallon for 4 weeks. It was only in the 4 week mark I found more than a very small amount of nitrate. If you are removing trash from the sand is not necessary to remove the water a lot. The biological filter will remove the ammonia and convert it into nitrates. Nitrate does not accumulate very quickly, and even hardy fish can not take a lot from him. Bettas can take large quantities. (Based on tests of tanks friend.)
