Is it possible to put a wood mantel to an aquarium for my hamster?

Tank Toppers seem to be expensive, unless you can find one below $ 15. I would like to have some sort of edge or platform and I have a small budget. HELP ME!? Would not it be glue kill your hamster if you have in the mouth?

gerbils in an aquarium we built a house on stilts or brick can be used to build a wooden platform (as long as the aquarium is on a solid surface) and then lean a ladder against it. this is a case of using your imagination (and everything you have on hand in the house!)
