Aquarium Uv Light

UV Sterilization in the aquarium, misinformation

I continue to follow the threads in the forums, aquarium items, and blogs about sterilization UV. It still amazes me a lot of misinformation spread about it, some masked in science. As I have said many times before, a UV sterilizer is not essential for any aquarium, however, even the goldfish I have had tanks keeping as many variables (similarities) in place as possible and noted differences and that includes thriving reef tanks.

What I also find interesting is that many of these same people who trash then indicate a protein skimmer is essential. I have kept in tanks with and without Skimmers (again all other possible variables or as close as possible), and noted changes in measurable parameters and found that themselves are useful, but often not by much and that the clay filters, DIY OSD or similar filters often can replace them (as well as UV sterilizers and good lighting on the head as MH).

Returning to the topic at hand, here is a topic that will discuss. In this thread of a person who offered the test but not perfect (scientific nature, but as good as it can often be in this hobby) was attacked doggy style stack without their back up other than statements criticizing their methods:

Arthur # 1 (Edited)

"If you read some documents scientific UV water sterilization is known to speak generally about a standard long tube, 40W UV mercury in a 3 "diameter lamp and the water flowing at a speed of about 500 gph or less. This type of configuration provides a dose of about 18,000 mW-sec/cm2. In order to increase the dose you need to down the water flow. For example, 250 gph

flow lamp mentioned above would be exposed to almost twice the dose of 34,000 mW-sec/cm2. This dose is sufficient to kill bacteria, yeast, some fungal spores, viruses and algae. And some degree aquarium lamps achieve this effect with unicellular algae. To kill the protozoa (Such as a school known "Paramecium" or our ich-causing "Cryptocaryon irritans)

should increase the dose.

MY COMMENT:

First, most studies I've read show se/cm2 10 000 mW for bacteria. Secondly, I read articles have shown that more than 30,000 mW-sec/cm2 with 90 watts at a speed of 200 gallons per minute (although it seems hard to believe, in my view often depends on whose data look. Thirdly, there is more to the treatment of Cryptocaryon just out right sterilization (I do not want my high reef tanks !!!), also redox potential exists Sterilizers and also improve water quality in general.

Finally, each unit is different and there are many variables of age of the bulb (Even a light bulb 3 months of age has lost 25%), temperature, design of the unit, after filtration (micron pre-filter greatly improves sterilization) and the wealth that I have found to be better at 20 gph (or less for most good units in applications for aquarium).

Arthur # 2 (edited):

Without a hospital tank, adding a new fish was always dangerous. Before, when I was

No UV on the tank, once one of the fish began to show signs of life

hope that the fish was usually less than 3 days, could not take

combined stress of the parasites and treatment copper. Other fish in the

tank invariably show signs of infestation later, but usually do

through. Once the sterilizer was first introduced, the rate at which the disease

spread decreased, my theory is that some of the parasites were being killed in

free-swimming stage. After that, the first fish to show signs usually

survived, and some of the other fish never showed any signs in all.

Once added to the sterilizer second, never lost a fish of ich, but managed

occasional pest. In short, there a direct relationship with

wattage of UV rays and the intensity and speed of propagation of the disease.

Since I was not religious in changing light bulbs (bulbs and receive less

effective over time), was also able to realize that an outbreak

worse when the sterilizer bulb was pretty old. Again, this did not happen once

had two execution units.

MY COMMENT:

This person probably had decent low-flow units, after filtration, and useful insight.

Without going into details too (my articles have been expanded much of this), as mentioned above are not other aspects of UV sterilizers as redox potential, this is not a difficult test to perform, not just test the UV Redox and then perform for a week and test again, easy! So many of the garbage that people like this have not considered all the variables, if they have not been, myself UV Sterilizers have seen do nothing. These were often 8-watt units running in a sink with a flow rate of 800 gph, a quartz sleeve and filtration calcified prior poor. This does not mean that a unit of 8 watts (or less) can not work, but not in those conditions (and in the case of a mark which is not mentioned, a design poor mixing chamber as well.) The pond aquarium "> 15 Watt UV Sterilizer custom has performed well in most all applications that have been placed on (the target = "target" title = "Compact UV Sterilizer Quartz"> Terminator compact UV Sterilizers it right also one of the best compact I've used UV along with Resun and Coralife).

What does a UV sterilizer is, is a tool for raising well with aquarium water changes, filtration, protein skimmers and more. In many applications of my side with and without the UV only one piece of Puzzle improved water quality be frank, an artificial environment (unless you want to deceive). I can not think of a particular experiment, with several tanks goldfish in a great customer service from me. All these tanks, in particular, had filter cartridges, cleaning and the same feeding schedule and load biological, the only difference was UV sterilizers. The difference in the amount of sick goldfish growth, and color was outstanding (the vice president were not to be conducting this experiment, and even a comment about why some tanks was better others, after she had us install UV sterilizers especially).
