Painting of a new aquarium stand construction?

Recently, we created an aquarium. I decided to paint it black so it is less prominent (Hey it's my first piece of furniture). I'm planning to sand the surface after it is built and painted. Question: Is it necessary to prepare the wood before painting with anything? I have latex (not oil) semi-gloss black paint. Or do I have to cover it after you paint? Thanks!

You remain vague sorta standing material real, but must master first, and what would really help the longevity of the pieces if you take something apart and all major end-cuts and then put it back together and prime the entire piece. I prefer oil primer because of the quality of wood today, but you could go w / a latex dark gray and then twice finished w / what you have. Good luck!
